Join Geneseo’s Art Club!
College, plain and simple, is stressful. There are classes to get to, homework to do, maybe a job, events that you might need to go to, and a lot of clubs and people that demand a lot of work or attention. To put it bluntly, there is a lot going on just about all the time. So how great would it be if you had some scheduled time just to relax each week? Not doomscrolling on your phone, but actually doing something peaceful that will calm you.
That is the great thing about Art Club! There is something so calming and grounding about painting. It is a slow and steady task that does demand your attention, but does not pile any extra stress on. There is no deadline to meet, no one grading you on your performance; it is just you and your paintbrush creating something together.
There are absolutely no expectations of you when you come to Art Club. There is nothing that you have to paint. You are simply given access to a plethora of paint, brushes, pencils, and canvases, then encouraged to create whatever makes you happy. You do not even have to paint if you do not want to. If you have a drawing in your sketchbook that you have been working on, you are welcome to bring it, and enjoy finishing it up to lovely music playing in the background, or bring some headphones to listen to whatever you would like.
Every other week, there is the option to have a bit more guidance if you so choose, with extra supplies being brought out for another activity. In the past, these have included other artistic activities, such as creating bracelets or painting picture frames. There are sometimes fun prompts to inspire your creativity, such as painting a picture that you already have saved to your phone. Of course, the usual supplies are still laid out, so you are free to choose to paint or draw something else if you would like, but a low-stress environment like Art Club is an excellent place to try something new. You might even discover a new artistic outlet that you end up loving.
Art Club is also a fantastic way to meet new people. How easy is it to glance over at what somebody sitting near you is creating, and say something like “That looks great!”? You now have an easy opening to start a conversation with a new person. Maybe someone will be painting a character or concept you happen to know well, and that is another easy way to spiral into a conversation. By the end of the hour, you might have made a new friend.
On top of that, Art Club is also a great excuse to hang out with friends that you already have, which is something many might not have time to do with the aforementioned constant busyness of college. This is a scheduled time to hang out in an environment that can work for anyone, regardless of their talent in art.
Art Club meets every Thursday at 7:00pm in Brodie 217. Even if you never picked up a paint brush in your life before, why not stop by? It is a judgement free, peaceful place, and we would love to have you!
