Things to do before Fall Break
As we approach the middle of the fall semester, students may start to feel a bit stir-crazy in their dorms. Before the momentary relief and relaxation we all get from the upcoming fall break Oct. 11 through Oct. 14, you may be wondering what to do around Geneseo before heading back home.
Academics start to pick up and cramming for exams becomes a regular occurrence for some; many get their first exam grade back, showing how much more they need to study for the next. Moments like these get very stressful, very quickly. It is important to prioritize your mental and physical well-being. While studying is a necessity, it is not healthy to focus solely on it; you also need to take breaks and shift your focus to other things regularly. A great way to look after yourself is to get out of your room, explore, and take your mind off of all your classes. With that in mind, here are a few things that you can do by yourself or with friends!
This beautiful New York (NY) State Park is approximately a 20-minute drive from campus, offering an opportunity to truly enjoy the changing seasons—whether that means viewing the many waterfalls, hiking along trails, or simply appreciating the surrounding nature. Wear comfortable shoes for walking outdoors and enjoy the remarkable autumn scenery in western Upstate NY!
Geneseo Farmers Market
Summer and early fall bring loads of tasty, farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, and supporting these local vendors is a fantastic way to treat yourself. You can spot many houses selling farm fresh eggs and produce around the Geneseo area, but if you are looking for the farmers market experience, clear your schedule for the last market of this 2025 season. The Geneseo Farmers Market at the intersection of Center and Main Street will take place from 3:00pm through 6:30pm once more on Oct. 9. You can find all the vendors on Visit Geneseo’s website!
Day trip to Rochester, NY
There are countless things to do if you decide to take on the brief 40-minute drive up to Rochester. For those who grew up in the surrounding areas, you may have visited The Strong National Museum of Play as a child; returning to something that previously brought you joy can be a great way to destress. Even if you have not, it is a space for all ages, so go ahead and read about their exhibits or collections—you may find something perfect for you!
If that is not what you are looking for, Rochester has many other experiences to offer. There are many museums, shopping destinations, and parks to visit, including, but not limited to, the Seneca Park Zoo, the Highland Park and Lamberton Conservatory, the Memorial Art Gallery (part of the University of Rochester’s campus), and the Eastview Mall. The Geneseo campus shuttle makes many stops in Rochester as part of its weekend services, so be sure to check out the bus routes to plan your next outing!
Spend the day locally
With Main Street just a quick walk past the academic halls on campus, we always have easy access to some calming small-town fall vibes. Sometimes, a break from classwork is needed at the last minute, or you want to get out of the house (or dorm room), but you do not have the energy to plan a day trip. But do not let that stop you from enjoying the day—take a stroll down Main Street and visit some of the shops with a yummy drink in hand and grab a tasty meal at any of the local food vendors! Sitting on a bench, people-watching as you listen to the crisp breeze blow through the falling golden-red leaves is just what you need after tending to numerous responsibilities throughout the day.
Check out the Events Calendar to see upcoming club events; there is always something happening on campus. If you are not interested in always being surrounded by people to interact with, a picnic on any of the grass around campus (especially Geneseo Village Park across from Doty Hall) is a lovely way to unwind. Bring your favorite snacks, drinks, and something to watch!
An essential part of life is becoming comfortable doing things without others. Do not put your life on hold waiting for friends, significant others, etc. to join you. If you are constantly waiting for your life to occur, it will feel like it never truly began. There is nothing to be ashamed of when taking yourself on solo dates. Take care of yourself as the semester progresses, and seize every opportunity to get out of the house!
