What is really going on with Connor Hellebuyck?

Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck remains in a high-stakes gridlock with the organization ahead of the 2026-27 season, holding out for a trade after being suspended for failing to report to training camp.
If you have been following the National Hockey League (NHL), you know goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has been instrumental for both the Winnipeg Jets and the United States National Team in these past Olympics. The 33-year-old has played his entire career with the Jets, was drafted in 2012, and has won three Vezina Trophies.
While his accomplishments are vast and his presence in between the pipes has been one of the most stabilizing forces in the league, the conversation surrounding Hellebuyck has shifted dramatically within the past few months. What once was a straightforward relationship between a franchise goaltender and the organization he helped define has become one of the most complicated storylines of the offseason.
With training camp on the horizon for the Winnipeg Jets’ 2026-27 NHL season, Connor Hellebuyck did not report and was suspended by the team. He issued a public statement following the suspension, saying, “I have tried to handle the situation quietly and respectfully while giving the organization time to explore its options… With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request. My position has not changed. I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family.”
The assumption that Hellebuyck wanted out due to his lack of a Stanley Cup actually appears to be something much more personal—and far more complicated. According to a report referenced by Yahoo Sports, Hellebuyck’s trade request is not rooted in hockey frustration at all. Instead, it stems from alleged issues involving how his family has been treated in the Winnipeg community.
If this is true, then there really is nothing the Jets can do about it, other than, of course, giving him what he wants. The only problem that the Jets are running into is the fact that Hellebuyck’s contract includes a no-movement clause, giving him the power to veto any trade offer and requiring his approval of the destination. This is making trade negotiations more difficult for both the Jets and any team wanting to make an offer.
That being said, Hellebuyck is left in limbo. Suspended for not reporting to training camp, waiting for a trade, and stuck in a situation where the team wants to respect his circumstances but is not making a deal.
The locker room, meanwhile, has tried to keep the situation at arm’s length. Jets captain and center Adam Lowry made it clear that the players cannot afford to get caught up in the rumor mill and uncertainty surrounding Hellebuyck’s trade.
Lowry said, “Obviously the situation is what it is. [If] you spend so much time speculating on it you're going to drive yourself crazy. The situation is going to resolve itself one way or the other, and I think from our perspective we’ve got to focus on getting ourselves ready for camp, getting the team ready and things like that. And as long as he’s a member of the Jets, we’ll treat that situation as such.”
He then emphasized how important it is for the Jets to keep their focus on the players who are present, saying, “Until that time, I don’t think it’s worth our time in the locker room speculating what’s going to happen. We’ve got to use the guys that are here and do our best to have a rebound year.”
For now, all anyone can do is wait. The Jets cannot trade him without his approval; Hellebuyck cannot return without reversing his stance, so now both sides are at a gridlock. Winnipeg will continue to prepare for this coming NHL season, while Hellebuyck will continue to hold out for a resolution that aligns with his personal circumstances and long-term priorities.
