While the Major League Baseball (MLB) season does not start until March 26, fans will not have to wait that long for competitive baseball. This year's iteration of the premier international baseball tournament has been marked on baseball fans’ calendars ever since the legendary finish to the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC). After the Classic final between Japan and the USA, Americans and baseball fans all around the world are ecstatic and hopeful that the 2025 World Baseball Classic will be even better. But before the tournament gets underway, let us rank some of the top teams competing in this year's WBC.
5. Team Mexico
I wrestled with putting Team Mexico even higher on the list, as this team is truly loaded with top-hitting talent. The team’s heart and soul is unquestionably outfielder Randy Arozarena, who ironically enough was born in Cuba. However, Randy soon became a Mexican citizen after defecting to Mexico from Cuba. Arozarena has long felt indebted to the country and is now attempting to repay it in full by bringing international glory to Mexico. Arozarena is not alone either, as Mexico's lineup is stacked, featuring a trio of all-star hitters in outfielder Jarren Duran, catcher Alejandoro Kirk, and first baseman Jonathan Aranda. While Mexico’s pitching staff is objectively on the weaker side, this lineup could be a nightmare for some of the tournament's favorites.
4. Team Venezuela
Venezuela is another dark horse squad that could do some serious damage in this tournament. While Mexico is not far behind Venezuela, the star power is what swayed me in placing them higher in my ranking. The outfield is especially star-studded, with the flamboyant Ronald Acuña Jr. leading the way. The former National League Rookie of the Year with the Braves is joined by the Milwaukee Brewers’ Jackson Churio, and the Boston Red Sox Wilyer Abreu. Venezuela is not without depth either, as the Contreras brothers, Gleyber Torres, and slugger Eugenio Suarez make up the infield. Along with a plethora of all-star hitters, they also feature key arms such as the Phillies crafty lefthander Ranger Suárez, and a former all star in with the Twins’ Pablo Lopez.
3. Team Japan
Despite not having an absurd amount of MLB talent, Japan is arguably still the team to beat. That has much to do with the fact that they have possibly the greatest baseball player to ever grace the game in Shohei Ohtani. In the last WBC, Ohtani won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, to nobody's surprise. Although Ohtani will receive most of the headlines, this Japanese team also features pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Ohtani’s teammate and reigning World Series MVP, as well as elite power-hitting infielder Munetaka Murakami. A Japanese victory in the WBC would mean their fourth title, and it would cement them as the true dominant force in international baseball.
2. Team Dominican Republic
This year's Dominican Republic WBC roster can best be summed up as an embarrassment of riches. The lineup is riddled with future Hall of Famers, from Juan Soto (Mets), Fernando Tatís Jr. (Padres), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Blue Jays), and Julio Rodríguez (Mariners). Not only is their lineup phenomenal, but they also have a spectacular pitching staff. Sandy Alcánatara and Christopher Sánchez form a potent one-two punch in the starting rotation, while the bullpen features flamethrower arms in Carlos Estévez and Gregory Soto. Oh, and I almost forgot—the team is managed by one of the greatest Dominican baseball players ever, Albert Pujols. It is safe to say this team is out for blood and looking for revenge after not making it out of the group stage in the 2023 WBC.
1. Team USA
Many might view this as a controversial placement, but I truly believe that Team USA is the most well-rounded squad in the tournament. In 2023, the USA just narrowly missed out on bringing home the title, and now they have formed a “Redeem Team” that might just be the most talented USA roster they have ever had. This time around, Aaron Judge has joined the team and is captaining the roster. The three-time MVP is flanked in the outfield by a fellow MVP in Bryce Harper, and the team also features Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal, who are widely considered to be the two best starting pitchers in baseball. Even those names are not even scratching the surface in describing the incredible talent that makes up the 2026 Team USA roster. But with starpower comes expectations and pressure, and we will see if Team USA falls short of those lofty expectations, or rises to the expectations and brings back international glory to the States.
Now that we have ranked the very best teams of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, it is time to play ball! It will be difficult to entirely live up to the storybook 2023 tournament, but it would be foolish to doubt international baseball's ability to deliver a riveting brand of baseball. The tournament kicks off starting Wednesday, Mar. 4, when Chinese Taipei takes on Australia in Tokyo.
