On Tuesday, Nov. 18, the SUNY Geneseo Knights women’s basketball team absolutely crushed the William Smith Herons with a final score of 82-53. The Knights are currently 4-2 overall and have yet to play any conference games. For games on the road, the Knights are currently undefeated, with a record of 4-0. They are also undefeated when facing the Herons, as this was their eighth straight win and largest margin of victory to date.

When the first quarter began, the Knights were the first to score. Junior forward Kristin Suydam hit a jumper from the paint to give the Knights their first lead of the game. Throughout the remainder of the quarter, the Herons proved to be decent competitors as the Knights were only ahead by a basket by the end of the quarter with a score of 12-10.

The Knights picked up the pace throughout the entirety of the second quarter. They went 11-17 for field goals. Kristin Suydam, sophomore guard Aliza Whitehead, and senior guard Maggie McGrane also each hit a shot from beyond the paint, adding an additional nine points to the scoreboard while going 3-4 for three-pointers. Senior forward Grace Galgano led the offense by bringing 11 more points in favor of the Knights. The Herons only scored 17 points for the entire quarter while the Knights had 28. By halftime, the Knights had a commanding lead with a score of 40-27.

After halftime, the Knights kept the energy up. The Herons’ defense was struggling against Galgano as she had two more layups to increase the deficit. The Knights’ whole team also held strong on the defensive end. The Knights did struggle with three-pointers during this quarter as they only went 1-4. By the end of the third, the score was 57-40, with the Knights still ahead holding a comfortable lead.

Instead of finding contentment in the score they had, the Knights only pushed the pedal to the metal. They went 2-2 for three-pointers and 10-16 for field goals to add 25 more points during the last quarter. The Herons’ fate was sealed when the Knights ran the clock out with just under a 30-point win. Leading the Knights in points was Galgano with 19 points, giving her 71 points for the season thus far. She also had 10 rebounds on both ends, proving herself to be a vital part of the Knights’ lineup. Suydam and McGrane each went 5-7 from the field, with Suydam tallying up 14 points and McGrane with a total of 11. Rebounds and forced turnovers were key factors in their win, as they had 12 second-chance points and an incredible 21 points off of turnovers.

Looking ahead, the Knights will not start playing conference games until after intersession. But the Knights will face their next game against the RIT Tigers on Saturday at 2 p.m. Out of the last four contests with the Tigers, the Knights have won 3-4. The game will be at home and on the weekend, so it's a great time to go and support your Knights!
