This past Saturday, the Geneseo Knights faced the Brockport Golden Eagles in a scrimmage at the Geneseo courts. It was a beautiful day for tennis, as it was sunny with little to no wind. Instead of the usual match setup, doubles and singles teams rotated for over two hours, facing new opponents each time. Not only was the scrimmage a great way to play extra tennis, but it also allowed for different levels of tennis to face one another. Even though there was no official score recorded, it was obvious that the Knights won the majority of games played.

For doubles, there was a large variety of teams that played. All three of the starting doubles teams played one set against Brockport, respectively. When the first doubles team of sophomore Joann Catalano and junior Natalie Pipes faced the Golden Eagles, they plowed through six games like it was nothing. Pipes was able to send multiple shots down the doubles alley that won them multiple points and scared her opponent in the process. In the second doubles team composed of sophomore Rachel Molloy and junior Samantha Rava, Molloy won around 10 points early with stunning execution of her volleys. Molloy was able to secure the win for the team, and they only dropped one game in the process. Finally, with third doubles, junior Talia Wutz and freshman Ashleigh Fredriksen took another victory quick and fast with a score of 6-0.

There were other doubles pairings that also made an appearance against Brockport. Sophomores Emily Kamber and Anna-Marie Hondorf rallied against the Golden Eagles with phenomenal points. Kamber had volleys that were considered “US Open”-tier from Coach Alan Haverly. Freshman duo Sophia Rivera and Alix Comisky also faced the Eagles in a set. The team was consistent in their groundstrokes and kept the rallies going for extended periods of time. All of the doubles teams were playing top tier, and it definitely showed with the scores at the end of each respective set.

For the singles portion of the match, great games were played all around. When freshman Lauren Levitano played, the score was obvious. She was pummeling forehands to opposite corners of the court, and it kept her opponent guessing throughout the entirety of their match. Freshman Paige Mosaicki was another standout player amidst the different matchups. She played consistently, which helped her gain several points over her Brockport opponent, who struggled to keep up. Mosaicki is only a freshman, but thus far, she has proven to be a great player for the Knights. Sophia Rivera, Alix Comisky, and Ashleigh Fredriksen also played their own respective singles matches. Although they are all only freshmen, all of them appeared to be comfortable on the court, making tough volleys and taking the win away from each of their respective opponents.

This upcoming weekend, the Knights will play matches on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Geneseo will be away at Ithaca, then on Saturday, the Knights will be taking another trip to Rochester to face the Yellowjackets. Both are non-conference, so it will be a great opportunity for the Knights to face some new competition and challenges. Be sure to keep up with the scores and outcomes of all the Knights’ upcoming matches.
