Why you should join The Lamron!

The Lamron, in case you do not know, is SUNY Geneseo’s weekly newspaper. We publish 25 articles every week, five articles in each section: Arts and Entertainment (A&E), Knights’ Life, News, Opinion (you are here), and Sports. Additionally, we include comics every week, and fun snippets in each unique section, whether it’s The Lamron’s top ten, Pet of the Week, Geneseo Police Report, Unpopular Opinions, or a word search.

I joined The Lamron as the Knights’ Life Editor in October of 2025, and I am so grateful for the opportunities it has provided me. I’m an English creative writing major who hopes to go into publishing, so The Lamron was an excellent chance for me to practice my reading, writing, and editing skills. It’s also taught me the tricky world of Adobe InDesign, which is the software program we use to layout each section of the paper for hard prints (a.k.a. weeks we produce a physical paper).

I’m particularly partial to student life, in case my time as Knights’ Life Editor didn’t clue you in, and I love getting to attend and write about what students, faculty, and staff are doing on and for campus. My section had quite a few new writers try their hand at articles this semester, and so, beyond my own experience writing for Knights’ Life, I love that people are finding something on campus they are passionate enough about to write an article. I think that most of my joy as the Knights’ Life Editor comes from witnessing my writers’ passion and guiding them through writing articles.

My second favorite part about being on the e-board of The Lamron, believe it or not, is tackling Adobe InDesign on Wednesdays in the office. If you do not know, InDesign is a massive software program that is essentially  cursed; some days it likes you and plays nice, some days it is the problem child of all problem children. Maybe it’s a hot take, but after months spent with the program, there’s something satisfying about knowing the ins and outs (mostly), and being challenged by something new every week we produce hard prints.

Yet, this is me and my experience. No matter your major, The Lamron will accept you with open arms as a staff writer, and the best part is you can write for any section on anything you want. So, if you’re an avid follower of the National Basketball Association (NBA) playoffs for example, you can report on it for Sports. If you keep up to date with local, national, or global news and want to introduce the campus community to the hottest and latest, you can. If you have an opinion—and, let’s be honest, you have multiple—or if you’re watching an awesome, underground show, you can write about it for Opinion and A&E, respectively. And, of course, you can always attend an event on campus to report on or talk about a club you’re in with me over at Knights’ Life!

The Lamron adds new people to their e-board every year, with positions posted on our Instagram at @thelamron, and these also don’t always include positions that involve editing articles. The Lamron has its very own Business and Public Relations Managers—two positions which anyone who wants business or marketing experience can easily find here with us. Additionally, if writing maybe isn’t your thing, there are always more ways to get involved with The Lamron. For example, you can submit your pet for consideration to be in the paper, or you could submit a comic!

I guarantee that no matter how you join The Lamron, it will be a rewarding experience and opportunity for some behind-the-scenes work on SUNY Geneseo’s campus newspaper. I hope you join us next year!
