Halloween costumes I want to see this year

Halloween is a great opportunity to get creative and explore different costume ideas! Movies, television shows, and topical online trends can provide inspiration for your next elaborate costume. Pick your favorite and get crafting!

Halloween is here, which means that we are about to see some showstopping costumes. I love seeing the people who go all out, get creative, and absolutely crush the costume game. From couples costumes, to group costumes, to a little solo moment, I have put together a list of costumes that I am hoping to see this year.

We are starting off strong with a classic couples costume. There are so many cute and creative costumes for couples, but these are the ones I want to see.

My all time favorite pick has got to be Padme and Anakin from the Star Wars (1977-2019) franchise. Specifically, I love Padme in her ombre dress and Anakin in his dark robes right before he becomes Darth Vader, but you really cannot go wrong with any version of the couple. Another great couples costume is Mia and Sebastian from La La Land (2016). Mia’s yellow dress with Sebastian's red bomber jacket, sunglasses, and that little red synthesizer keyboard he wore would make for a lovely Halloween night. For something simple but sweet, Nick and Charlie from Heartstopper (2022-) would make a particularly adorable couples costume.

Trio costumes can get tricky to plan, but there are some really good options to pick from. For any Dancing With The Stars (2005-) fans out there, hear me out: Carrie Ann, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli. To add to the fun, bring out some scoring paddles to rate other people’s costumes you see. Another I would love to see comes from one of the biggest blockbuster hits of this summer: Superman (2025). A Superman, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor trio would keep it classic yet relevant; and someone has to dress their dog up as Krypto too!

When it comes to group costumes, there are so many options to choose from. Here are a few group costume ideas I would love to see walking around campus this weekend. First up is the Barden Bellas from Pitch Perfect (2012); It is the classic college girl group costume. Easy, iconic, and for me? A guaranteed crowd pleaser, especially if you all recreate the final performance from the first movie.

Next is the band Fifth Harmony, specifically the outfits from their “Work from Home” live performance where they pretend to fix a bulldozer. The toolbelts and the construction boots are iconic. For a more nostalgic look, I would love to see a group of American Girl Dolls. Dress up as classic dolls like Kit, Julie, Molly, and Caroline. Each friend could dress up as the doll they had growing up!

And finally, someone please do the characters from the PBS Kids show Super Why! (2007-2016). It is a unique spin on the classic superhero group costume and would be so fun!

Halloween is also the perfect time for you and your friend to be a dynamic duo. First up is Mrs. Nesbit and Woody from Toy Story (1995). Buzz Lightyear’s alter ego deserves a moment in the spotlight. Greg Heffley and Rowley Jefferson from Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010) is a top-tier duo for me, especially if you recreate the meme of Rowley spotting the chocolate stain on Greg's pants. With Wicked: For Good (2025) coming soon, I am also hoping to see plenty of Elphaba and Glinda duos. I cannot forget to add the Coldplay affair couple to my list—that would make for a great last-minute costume. And finally, Coach Bolton and Mrs. Darbus from High School Musical (2006) is another duo I am waiting to see!

If you are flying solo for Halloween this year, do not worry because there are so many great solo costume ideas to choose from. But for my list, the top three solo costumes are Sabrina Carpenter, Mother Gothel, and Snoopy. From pop stars to cartoon characters, there are so many great solo costumes I am excited to see this weekend.

No matter what you have planned for this Halloween, I hope you have a wonderful and safe Halloweekend!
