This year Geneseo hosted their second annual Douglass Day event. It took place in the ballroom within the Robert MacVittie Union. The all-day affair, hosted by the Center for Digital Learning, began at 9 a.m. and had activities until 3 p.m. Professor Paul Schacht played an active role in the planning and operation of this event and was eager to discuss the details surrounding the day.

SUNY Geneseo’s athletic teams have taken home the State University of New York Athletic Conference’s (SUNYAC) Commissioner’s Cup for seven consecutive years. The honor, which measures the top overall athletic program in the SUNYAC conference, determines the overall winner for each given school year. To continue to have the consistent success Geneseo has, many of the teams on campus have needed to perform well for years on end. This is not any more applicable than with the men’s and women’s swim and dive teams led by head coach Paul Dotterweich.

SUNY Geneseo is proud to advertise numerous available on-campus clubs and encourages the creation of new clubs for its student body. One Geneseo student recently took advantage of this to create a brand new club on campus. Junior business administration major Julia Kimmel has created and started the Vegan Club at Geneseo which held its first official meeting on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024. 

On Monday, Feb. 12, Geneseo’s sector of the Breathe Easy Campaign threw a smoke-free campus Valentine's party in the Union ballroom. The event allowed students to make “Valentine's Day cards, enjoy some snacks, and gain some skills to stop using tobacco products.” They supplied all materials for card making along with candies and chocolate to add to the cards (or eat yourself). While making your loved ones personalized Valentine's Day cards, you could eat free pizza and enjoy music with friends and Breathe Easy interns.

Every spring and fall since the 1870s, SUNY Geneseo Greek organizations complete the rush season with a day known as “Bid Day.” It is common to hear sorority members saying “Bid Day, best day” as it is a highly anticipated event combining weeks and months of planning.

Joining a club on campus is one of the easiest ways to meet new people and even develop new friendships in college. Many of the clubs at Geneseo have no requirements to join, and just showing up to a meeting is enough! Geneseo offers a variety of clubs on campus that adhere to a multitude of common interests among students. 

Earlier this week I had the honor of interviewing Dr. Paul Pacheco, a Professor of Anthropology at Geneseo who has been chair of the Anthropology department, since 2014. I started the interview by giving Dr. Pacheco a chance to debunk some common misconceptions about his field. “We don't get too [many] misconceptions, probably the biggest one is people think I have something to do with dinosaurs.” Since he does not work with dinosaurs, I asked him to explain what anthropology and archaeology are. 

Eating any sort of breakfast as a college student is great, but eating a breakfast full of protein can be extremely beneficial. This ham and cheese omelet recipe is packed full of protein while still serving as a delicious breakfast. This recipe can be shared, or work as an energizing recipe for one! 

Hannah Myers is an English literature major here at SUNY Geneseo who is finishing out her final semester here before graduation. She has also served as the news editor for The Lamron for the past year. As a final homage, and as our way to show her how much her fellow editorial staff has appreciated her dedication and endless searching for coverage, I sat down with her to conduct a final “debrief” of her time at The Lamron and SUNY Geneseo at large. 

A self-proclaimed “southsider at heart” and senior childhood special education major Elisabeth Schumacher has served as the Lamron’s public relations manager for the past three semesters. Unfortunately for our staff at The Lamron, Schumacher is graduating and joining the adult world.

Here at Geneseo, the Shakti club represents the countries of South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, and the Maldives. The club and its executive work constantly throughout the semester planning events, dinners, celebrations, and weekly meetings.  

Over the past semester, The Lamron has been lucky enough to fall under the leadership of current managing editor, senior English (creative writing) major Ella Pearcy, who will graduate in December. Those who know Pearcy know that she is both stringent and silly; she assembles weekly meeting notes chalk-full of emojis and sidebars, while also effectively keeping our executive board on-track and on-time. I’ve been friends with Pearcy since our freshman year, and adored speaking with her for this Invasion of Privacy about how she has grown into such a brilliant writer, editor, friend, and human throughout her undergraduate career. 

December often coins the nickname “Do Good December,” challenging people to do some acts of good throughout the month. A fantastic way to do good this December is with the Geneseo American Red Cross club. The club was founded here at Geneseo in 2006 and has been helping the campus and community ever since.

On Thursday, Nov. 9, the Alliance for Community Enrichment (ACE) hosted a free movie night on campus. The event was hosted in Wadsworth Auditorium and started at 9 p.m.

Box mac and cheese is a classic meal for many college students, but it is not the most nutritious meal. Proper meals are important to keep up energy levels and are very important for college students. Next time you are craving box mac and cheese, try out this adult mac and cheese for the same great taste with better ingredients. 

This past Tuesday, Nov. 13, was World Kindness Day. This international holiday was first introduced in 1998, and it is devoted to promoting kindness all over the world. In honor of this day, here are some ways to show extra kindness on campus. 

Knights Philanthropic Council (KPC) hosted its first-ever trivia this past Wednesday, Nov. 15. For those who did not know, KPC (previously known as Phonoton) is a fairly new organization on campus that consists of a group of students who work to steward our alumni donors, while educating the campus about the great impact our donors have on our community.

While the inevitable snow on the way may strike fear into some hearts, it brings about endless opportunities for fun that cannot be found anywhere else. This winter, instead of staying inside and missing the winter wonderland outside, try out some of these silly snow activities with friends and make memories that will last a lifetime.

With Diwali less than a week away, the Interfaith Center near campus hosted a dinner last Saturday, Nov. 4, from 6-9 p.m. to celebrate the festival of lights. The Interfaith Center is conveniently located close to campus, just a short walk down Franklin Street from the Lauderdale Health Center.
