We hope that everyone had a good Halloween this year!
Halloween is always an exciting time of year. Whether you are trick-or-treating or staying in, Halloween is always fun. This year, Geneseo students participated in a variety of activities. A majority of students partied hard on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night leading up to Halloween night. With Halloween being on a Saturday this year, it was a big deal to have a multitude of costumes, get dressed up, and hang out. Students dressed up in various costumes including ladybugs, the Cat in the Hat, The Lorax, and even blow up dinosaurs. Seeing the fantastic costumes all around campus the week leading up to what is known as “Halloweekend” was so much fun.
Now, it is understood that not all students will want to go out and party. It is surely not my thing. There are still plenty of options if you are not into the party scene. After speaking with some students, I heard what those who didn’t go out did instead.
One person told me they baked cookies and watched Halloween movies! This is a great option for if you have a whole group of friends who do not want to go out. Some of my personal favorite Halloween movies to get into a spooky mood are Hocus Pocus (1993), Ghostbusters (1984), and Beetlejuice (1988). Whether you are into horror movies or not, sitting with some friends and eating freshly baked cookies never hurt anyone.
Others who I spoke with said something similar in that they binge watched horror movies and ate too much candy. Just because you do not go trick or treating does not mean you cannot enjoy some candy! My horror movie recommendations include The Lost Boys (1987), Trick r’ Treat (2007), and Scream (1996). Sitting and watching movies to celebrate is popular among those who did not go out, and it is what I did personally. Going over to my friend’s dorm and watching Backrooms (2026) was how I spent my Halloween night! If you did not go out, there is nothing wrong with that—many people I know stayed in.
Some students went into the village and went trick-or-treating. I did not know where the houses were around here that gave out candy, but I was told that some professors live in the village and were handing out candy to both kids and students on Halloween night. Maybe next year, if you are not a party-goer, you can get a group of friends together, get dressed up, and go trick-or-treating! I was told that the students who went had a blast.
There were also events on campus running during the week. The Multicultural Center hosted a Halloween celebration, the Musical Theater Club put on a movie night, and the Geneseo Campus Activities Board (GCAB) had a Halloween week craft and social event. The big event was Fall Fest. To close out the spooky activities, GCAB hosted the 2026 Fall Fest in the MCU Ballroom on Nov. 1. There was live music from Pluck, pumpkin painting, blow up bowling, a popcorn bar, and more! If you could not attend this year, like myself, stop by next year for some of the fun events the campus has to offer.
Overall, Halloweekend was a success at SUNY Geneseo. Students had a blast—whether they went out or stayed in and watched movies. Next year, if you are in the spirit, make sure to go trick-or-treating in the village or maybe attend one of the numerous events on campus!
