The voice of The Lamron, Cruise, has filled the office with silly questions and an intense love for many different forms of media. Their love for The Sims will be missed by all.
The beating heart of The Lamron for the past two years has been senior Kendall Cruise. Beginning as the Opinion Editor in the Fall ‘23 semester, Cruise has dedicated endless hours, effort, and love to the newspaper. By Spring ‘24, Cruise was prepared and eager to step into the leadership role of Managing Editor and has helped ensure the smooth function of The Lamron for these past three semesters.
Cruise is a senior English (creative writing) and adolescent education major with a minor in philosophy. Outside of just The Lamron, they also serve as a trainer with the Safe Zone program, a tutor for the Writing Learning Center, and have worked closely with the Philosophy OUTREACH program.
When asked about the relationship between their major work and involvement with The Lamron, Cruise commented that it has “been a really great place to learn, you know, like leadership skills,” and build both positive yet “authoritative” relationships. As a future teacher, Cruise believes in the balance of “give and take” with “mutual respect” being at “the core of those relationships, so that you can sort of create an environment where everyone can be their most productive, give their most effort,” and being Managing Editor has provided a great opportunity to practice and build this philosophy.
Throughout her time at the newspaper, Cruise has written an astonishing number of articles, including many Staff Editorials, thus earning her the peer-designated title of “The Lamron”— as all Staff Editorials are credited under the authorship of the paper as a whole. Cruise commented that some of their favorite works have been their “OG [original] Sims article,” an article on the “Bella Goth lore,” an Opinion article about the misuse of mental health terms, and several album reviews. She also highlighted her normaL articles and the overall “normaL season,” which “is always a fun one because, like, everything's just like a little bit extra goofy.”
Looking to post-graduation, Cruise is planning on taking a gap year and says their “big goal is that [they’re] hoping to learn how to drive.” Additionally, this gap year will provide essential time for Cruise to complete their teaching certification, work, and apply to graduate school. Cruise is considering a Master’s program in literacy but is also considering pursuing an MFA program in creative writing. The latter goal is “not something that I thought I would ever do, like when I entered college,” but a possibility that their work with Geneseo’s creative writing department has inspired.
In reflection on the program, Cruise declared that the “creative writing department here is just like, so lovely, and I've had so much wonderful guidance and support.” Here, she wanted to give a special shoutout to Professor Caroline Beltz-Hosek, who has “believed in me so much and my ability as a writer to do really awesome things.” With this “extra boost of confidence,” Cruise feels ready to put in applications for these very competitive programs.
Looking more broadly at her whole career at Geneseo, “the day-to-day college vibes” at Geneseo, according to Cruise, align with her core values of academia and friendship. College has allowed them to simultaneously pursue their love of learning and have “easy access to [their] buddies and [their] pals.” So, in the wise parting words of Cruise, “Be fabulous. Do your homework, um, except for when you don't want to, hang out with your friends,” and, of course, “join The Lamron.”
