Weezer “shines again” with new single, announces new album and tour for 2026

Weezer is a four-person band well known throughout the music scene, usually focusing on rock music. They have been active with a tour, a new album, and even a film in the works.

Earlier this month, alternative rock legends Weezer released the single “Shine Again” following a series of cryptic teasers released to the internet, in which they also announced the release of a new album. The single and album are the first new material to be debuted by the band in four years, following a hiatus after the 2022 releases of the SZNZ project, according to Billboard.

However, the band had remained in the public eye despite the lack of new material being released. The band celebrated the 30th anniversary of their iconic self-titled debut “Blue Album” (1994) with an extensive deluxe edition and a special North American tour, according to uDiscover Music. The band has also announced plans for a film to be developed, with John Wick (2014) actor Keanu Reeves reportedly expected to star as a villain, according to an article on Esquire. Even recently, the band’s 2014 single “Go Away” went viral on social media platforms such as TikTok, as seen on an article on Stereogum. Fans of the band were desperate for new material from the California quartet, however, and their patience was rewarded with “Shine Again,” which was released on Apr. 1, according to Our Culture.

“Shine Again,” which was written by the band’s longtime drummer Patrick Wilson, according to Billboard, features a return to a familiar sound for the band—that being the heavier and more distorted guitars, not unlike their self-titled  “White Album” (2016), according to an article from Reveille. The lyrics detail the monotony of daily life, and the tasks that come with an adult life, ultimately crescendoing with frontman Rivers Cuomo stating that “The sun inside/ Will shine/ Shine again.” The message of the song appears to reflect the changing attitudes of the band themselves as they gain a renewed energy for performing and writing music together in their older years, as noted by the same Reveille article.

“Shine Again” and the rest of the currently untitled album is the first Weezer album under Warner Records’ Reprise label, who signed the band in preparation for the album and took them from their previous label, Atlantic Records, according to an article on Stereogum. The same article confirms that the album is set to be produced by Kenneth Blume and Klas Åhlund. Blume had previously produced the album Getting Killed (2025) for the indie rock band Geese, and an article on Our Culture adds that Åhlund made production contributions to Swedish singer Robyn’s latest album. According to Stereogum, Blume and Åhlund incorporated elements “from Desert rock bands like Kyuss” when referring to the sonic direction of the upcoming project. The production duo also made direct reference to the self-titled  “White Album” (2016), with Blume stating that he “studied a lot of Weezer, really really hard” in preparation.

Weezer kicked off the press cycle for the new album and subsequent tour with a series of pop-up events across Los Angeles. These events, known as the “initiation” portion of the Weezer: The Gathering tour, featured pickleball events and a special rooftop concert, according to New Musical Express Weezer: The Gathering tour is set to begin Sept. 8, 2026 in Sacramento, California, with Weezer being accompanied by fellow bands The Shins and Silversun Pickups, according to an article on Stereogum

While details regarding the album’s eventual title and release are scarce, fan excitement for the upcoming album is at an all-time high. As one of those excited fans, I have been eagerly awaiting even the scantest bit of information regarding the next project from one of my favorite musical acts. If the production of the single is to be representative of the rest of the project, an album on par with the fan favorite “White Album” (2016) may not be too far away.
