The beloved Harry Potter book series became an even more beloved film series in the early 2000s. The books are once again being reimagined as series that will be able to bring even more of the books to life.
On Mar. 25, the new Harry Potter (2026- ) television show trailer was released by HBO Max. According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, “Wednesday’s two-minute video takes us all the way from the Dursleys’ house…to Hogwarts.”
The two-minute trailer—which can be viewed on YouTube—features key scenes from Harry’s life, including his time with the Dursleys, his arrival at Hogwarts, and glimpses of iconic characters like Hagrid, Dumbledore, and the Sorting Hat. The trailer perfectly sets the scene of Harry’s awful childhood.
Visually, the trailer heavily echoes the original films’ world with its familiar Hogwarts setting, and music that fans will immediately recognize. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the trailer had 277 million views in 48 hours, and is HBO’s most-watched trailer ever.
The television show that will be released over the next decade is a live-action television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series that is being produced by HBO and Warner Bros. According to Metro, J.K. Rowling will also be serving as an executive producer on the show. The show is set to follow along a long-form, retelling of the original novels, with each season covering one of the books, of which there are seven.
The first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997), is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2026, on HBO in the United States and HBO Max globally. According to USA Today, it will have eight episodes that span a decade in Harry, Hermoine and Ron’s lives. It has also been confirmed by Harry Potter that the first season will showcase “never-seen-before moments from the stories [that] will be brought to life on screen for the first time.” This includes “the Muggle school,” “That haircut,” “The London Underground” and more! This knowledge has Harry Potter readers all over the world ecstatic now that they get an even greater insight into their favorite characters.
The characters are portrayed by a young new cast with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. According to ITV, “The three children were cast in the starring roles after an open casting call saw around 32,000 children audition for the lead roles.”
The same article confirms that the first season also features actors like John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. The series is set to dive more deeply into the books’ storylines and character moments than the films could in two-hour formats, giving fans a chance to explore Hogwarts and the Wizarding World in greater detail.
The new Harry Potter (2026- ) television series is shaping up to be a huge adaptation and for many fans seeing the familiar Wizarding World will strike a nostalgic chord. For most fans, this will be the first time they have seen the characters in a film since the release of the last movie in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows–Part 2 (2015). The show will certainly capture feelings of nostalgia within life-long Harry Potter fans.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery, has hyped HBO’s Harry Potter as ‘the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period.’” The new Harry Potter (2026- ) television series is most certainly a globally anticipated release that has fans on the edge of their seats.
