Lackadaisy’s (2023-) roots lie in web comics, but the animated show captures just the same art style and wonderful humor.
This month, running from Oct. 9 through Oct. 12, 2025, New York Comic Con took place. This three-day affair is always an exciting time for fans in a variety of fandoms, offering opportunities to hear news about their favorite movies and shows, grab some merch, and even meet their favorite actors. This year, fans of the indie series Lackadaisy (2023- ) got an exciting announcement: From this point onward, the indie animation studio Glitch Productions will be helping to produce the show!
For anyone who may be unaware, Lackadaisy (2023- ) tells a tale of anthropomorphic cats living in Saint Louis in 1927 during the Prohibition Era, which was defined by its ban on the sale of alcohol. The fact that they are cats does not affect their behavior much, other than the occasional hiss. It seems to only serve to make the 2D animation style and character design even more charming. The show follows a group of bootleggers called Lackadaisy who gather alcohol for a speakeasy (an illegal bar).
Lackadaisy is made up of a group of charming characters, including Rocky (played by the Indie-Series legend, Michael Kovach), who is poetic, yet clumsy and chaotic. Freckle (played by Belsheber Rusape) is rather awkward, but has a thrill for violence, and Ivy (played by Lisa Reimold) is a cheerful, yet experienced bootlegger born into the business. Mitzi May (played by Ashe Wagner) runs the speakeasy, a tired old woman (old cat?), who is struggling to keep the speakeasy running after losing many partners, such as her deceased husband Atlas and Mordecai (played by Sungwon Cho), who joined a rival group of bootleggers called Merigold.
Lakadaisy started as a webcomic that was first published in 2006 by Tracy J. Butler, gathering a large enough fanbase willing to fund the release of the show through Patreon donations. The original comic series is still available through a website of its own, simply called Lackadaisy.com, as well as on Webtoons.
In terms of animation, Lackadaisy (2023-) is only made up of one pilot, and a couple of shorts, which can be found on Youtube. It is truly incredible, a fantastic watch that makes any viewer an instant fan, captivating them with the perfect balance of action and heart, loveable characters, beautiful yet simplistic animation, and is even sure to earn a laugh or two. Since the release of the pilot on Mar. 29, 2023, a team of creators has been hard at work attempting to create an animated series, which was planned to be made up of five 10-minute episodes. However, animation is a difficult task, especially when there is so little funding.
This is what makes Glitch’s collaboration so exciting. According to the Glitch Direct announcement at New York Comic Con, Glitch will assist the original creators behind Lackadaisy (2023- ) with funding, marketing, and general support while leaving them in complete creative control. New merch for the show has already been released, including a Mitzy May plush and a vinyl, shown off in comedic advertisement videos that are reminiscent of Glitch’s infamous merch ads.
Through partnering with Glitch, the series was even able to expand its original goal, now promising to make six TV-length episodes rather than five short ones! This exciting announcement came alongside a brand new song called “Last Call”, written by Bryan Teoh and featuring the vocals of Willow Wilde, which already has 1.1 million views on YouTube, paired with stunning instrumentals and animation that promises great things for the future of this show.
Glitch has stated that reaching out to Lackadaisy (2023- ) is the start of a new direction for the company. While they are going to create and produce shows of their own under Glitch Productions, they are also going to start picking up other indie series like Lackadaisy (2023- ) in order to offer extra support. Shows like these are going to be labeled “Glitch Presents.” Glitch Presents has guaranteed that they will leave complete creative control to the original creators, which is truly a fantastic promise.
Lackadaisy (2023- ) is yet to have an official release date for the rest of the series, but it will likely be sooner rather than later because of this new partnership. Whatever the future holds for the series, it is sure to be wonderful to witness.
