This is happening now: Violence in African nation of Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast, a former French colony, has been embroiled in violence as forces loyal to former president and strongman Laurent Gbagbo, featured in the top left photograph, battle the republican forces (top right) loyal to newly elected President Alassane Ouattara . The violence comes after Gbagbo refused to relinquish power following his defeat by Ouattara in November. Gbagbo's attempt to retain power resulted in a conflict that nearly led to civil war, NPR reported. On April 11, Gbagbo was arrested and is being  held by Ouattara's government pending a decision as to his fate. Despite speculation that Gbagbo will be handed over to The Hague for prosecution as a war criminal, Ouattara denied the possibility at a press conference held on April 12 (bottom). At that conference, Ouattara also called on fighters on both sides of the conflict to lay down their arms and cease the bloodshed that had peaked 1,000 at the time of this printing.
