Obama administration hazy on marijuana policy

Abstract:
In response to a question taken at a town hall meeting regarding marijuana legalization, President Barack Obama was quick to say, "No, I don't think that [legalization] is a good strategy to grow our economy."

Many people were disappointed by his reaction, as Obama did not offer any counter-arguments and completely ignored the potential medical and social benefits of ending the prohibition on marijuana....

The effect legalized marijuana would have on the cultivation of industrial hemp which is now prohibited must be considered . If marijuana were legal hemp would also be legal. The prospect of legal hemp would bring far more income to farmers than marijuana as the products for hemp have far reaching social consequences. Hemp can be used as fuel, food, paper and fiber. In some parts of the nation hemp can be harvested three times a year. Hemp would replace many items that petroleum now produce. Such as nylon and plastics. The plastic would be of high quality and biodegradable. Marijuana and hemp are the same plant and should always be considered together when weighting the merits or demerits of legalization. The legalization of this plant would benefit all americans. One of those benefits being a lessening of our dependence on foreign oil. Another would be the environment as this plants products would be sustainable and benevolent to our exosphere. It would put farmers to work bring new economy and tax income. The effect of legalization would be felt on the industrial products of the plant and the benefits would far outweigh any problems associated with the drug.

I think that they estimated that California alone would make 1 billion dollars a year just by taxing it.

I am rare in that I am a conservative who is not opposed to this. I believe that if people choose to use this plant for its various industrial uses, it would be beneficial. If people choose to use it as a drug, I believe they should deal with the consequences of that choice - without someone else paying for it.

Why should their be consequences for it though?

Taimur,
I was referring to drug addiction and the possible negative effects that can occur from overuse of marijuana. I have no problem with people choosing to use it, as long as those people do not expect me to pay (tax or otherwise) for rehab if necessary. I was not referring to legal consequences, if thats what you thought. Hope that helps.

"Why should their [sic] be consequences for it though?"

Mr. Gibson, I don't believe you read Rusty's post correctly. He was referring to the inherent consequences that result from the use of marijuana, such as the increased risk of schizophrenia due to marijuana's effect on dopamine receptors in the brain. If one has a genetic history of schizophrenia, even mild cannabis use will increase one's chance of actually developing schizophrenia significantly. Don't believe me? Think that a little ganja every once and a while won't be detrimental to your health? Wrong. Check the plethora of articles on the subject and be surprised.

Wow I am making typos everywhere. "Why should there* be consequences" is what I meant.

Rusty: yes I did misinterpret your post. I thought you were referring to legal consequences. My mistake. Thanks for clarifying.

Champion,
I may be misinterpreting your post too, but I would like to state that this issue does not affect me personally. I just think that the drug laws in this country are absurd.
