Mass media hysteria doesn't ease a panic

Abstract:
As you are no doubt aware, there's been a swine flu outbreak - largely in Mexico, where it may be fairly called an epidemic, perhaps even a national emergency; 152 deaths and upward of 2,500 possible cases don't lie....

Hey Lamron,
I am a former Editor-In-Chief of a school paper and while I do think that every single outbreak of disease does get the media's attention, I think that Journalists are just trying to do their jobs.
Their job is to find the next big story before anyone else does and if they're just resorting to medical events, which is kind of pathetic, you have to agree that it does make some sense that they would utilize disease so much.
While it is kind of insane that every news station is telling the same story, you can't blame them for wanting a piece of the pie! They do keep people informed about what they can do to prevent catching it, though its blown out of proportion!
Hope you like another view on this!
Thanks for writing!

Part of the panic of this event has been created intentionally by the Obama administration and unintentionally by foot-in-mouth Biden. It is being made into a far bigger deal than necessary so it will be exploitable as a tool to push the socialist medicine agenda. I believe they knew about this long ago. The kidnapping we were suddenly all warned about in Mexico has beein going on for years. Suddenly, we get warned. Things don't add up.

Even if that were true, I think utilizing a panic to push for more widely available health care seems more forgivable than using one to justify starting two wars to secure oil interests, but I guess that's just my liberalism showing.

But more to the point, it's not true. The president himself went to Mexico three days after the first case was reported, and upon his return, when swine flu first came to the media's attention, Obama straight up told media outlets that it was "not a cause for alarm." He didn't even seek medical attention, in order to encourage others without symptoms not to either.

So I don't know what to tell you, Rusty, whoever you are. Your conservative nightmare of affordable, quality health care is still on the distant horizon, and while it's on its way, Obama isn't using the swine flu to hasten it along.

I didn't mention anything about starting two wars, or that it was the correct move. If you think the war in Afghanistan was to secure oil interests and not to destroy the regime that was clearly harboring Binladin and others responsible for 9/11, perhaps you have fallen off your rocker. Iraq, I will agree was the wrong course, however, will disagree on the motives.

Your liberalism is showing because your blind idealism is showing. I view thousands coming to this country for medical care from countries with socialized medicine as evidence that such programs do not work. Government programs always end up as disasters. Half of the "issues" we face today are attempts to "fix" government controlled programs. The media is exploiting swine flu first to sell papers, and second, because they are up the president's anus. Obama can say one thing, while his administration clearly does another. It is a brilliant strategy.

National Health Care is not a bad thing, you need to get your facts straight Rus. If you looked at parts of the health care plan you would see that its actually not that liberal or socialist. For example part of the plan would call for everyone to buy healthcare or face fines for not having insurance (similar to owning car insurance) now everyone will have to pay to the health care system saving much more money than the current system. Now anyone can walk into an emergency and get help and they dont have to have insurance-their free healthcare becomes more taxes on Americans.
George Bush was a joke!! He entirely used his own propaganda to spend BILLIONS of American dollars on an unnecessary war instead say-saving the FAILING education system. As an honor roll student in high school its a joke to go to class everyday because my peers that do not even try can pass their classes due to George Bush's "No Child Left Behind Act".
Open your eyes.
